The Wild Cards - Nature on a postcard.
The Wild Cards are a collection of 100 pieces of artwork, created as postcards, from two books:- The Lost Words and The Lost Spells.
The Lost Words book was a collaboration between writer Robert Macfarlane and artist Jackie Morris.
They had become aware that some words in our language were losing both use and context amongst the young. Simple words such as otter, field, bramble were becoming less familiar to children and had actually been removed from the Oxford Junior Dictionary simply because of a lack of usage.
Both Macfarlane and Morris were staunch advocates of the principle that words matter. They wanted to explore how they could influence the notion that knowing a certain word is all part of the process of storytelling and the simple expansion of a sentence into something more thought provoking.
So they set about creating books that highlighted nature through art but also the love of language.
The books became a huge success for people of all ages and campaigns were launched in which copies could be donated to schools, nursing homes and hospices. The follow up book 'The Lost Spells' continued the joy of celebrating both nature and the play and thought provocation of the written word.
The Postcard collection box celebrates the great work of the two books and makes a wonderful collection and gift.
